Ravensara

Ravensara aromatica

Ravensara essential oil

Ravensara aromatica is an endemic Malagasy tree of the Lauraceae family whose bark oil is dominated by methyl chavicol (estragole, 83-98%), while leaf oils display considerable chemotype variation with methyl eugenol, sabinene, or a-terpinene as alternative principal components. This chemical profile sets it clearly apart from the commonly confused Ravintsara (Cinnamomum camphora ct. cineole), which is rich in 1,8-cineole and shares no dominant constituent with Ravensara aromatica. Early Malagasy ethnopharmacological studies documented its antimicrobial activity against a range of bacterial strains and Candida isolates, establishing it as a traditional remedy for respiratory and infectious complaints on the island [1]. The warm, intensely anise-like bark oil has a long history of use in Malagasy folk medicine and is employed in aromatherapy for its purifying and immune-supportive character; the first phytochemical investigation of the species confirmed the Lauraceae sesquiterpene and phenylpropanoid chemistry responsible for these properties [2].
